Summer Food Plot Plant Descriptions

Sorghum makes a high-energy grain that matures and becomes palatable to deer in the fall – when you want it
Soybeans are a favorite summer food for deer
Deer eat the leaves of sunflowers in early summer and all wildlife relish the high-energy seeds in fall
Sunnhemp is a great legume with deep roots that will fix Nitrogen, feed deer and provide cover. It grows best in the south as it needs lots of heat

Planting a Multispecies Crop for Maximum Biomass Production

When you combine all of the above plants, you will find that they all grow better together. Diverse cover crops are extremely good for soil building and maximizing the available forage for deer. You can let the summer cover crop go to seed and deer can feed on the seedheads of sorghum, sunflowers and peas/beans but it is better to drill through it – planting green, a fall/winter/spring cover crop. That will be the subject of another article.

This diverse cover crop contains many species that are beneficial to the soil and to wildlife
